峨山旧名嶍峨，据明《万历云南通志》记载：“唐时为嶍猊蛮所居，名嶍峨部，阿僰蛮酋逐嶍猊据其地”。《清史稿》载：“东北嶍山，其后峨山，县以此为名”又据《云南通志馆征集云南各县疆域资料》载：“峨山高耸县治之北，势甚巍峨，峨者大也，是以山为峨名之由来，嶍山在峨山之下，有嶍猊人居焉，以人名山，是为嶍山命名之由来。元时建县于嶍山之阳，北有峨山为其屏障，嶍峨连用，为嶍峨命名之由来”。民国18年（1929年）峨山人徐为光（任省民政厅厅长）认为“嶍峨”与“峨山”与“习恶”谐音，殊不雅训，根据乡绅要求，签呈省政府将“嶍峨”改为“峨山”。省政府于同年10月8日115次会议决议呈经中央核准，于民国19年（1930年）1月1日始更名为峨山县。
Eshan
It is recorded in The Annuals of Yunnnan during the Reign of Wanli that it was “inhabited by Xuni barbarians in the Tang Dynasty and named Xu-e Mininstry. Later, the chief of Aji barbarians occupied the region”. It is recorded in The History of Qing Dynasty that “the county was named after Mount Xu on its northeast side and Mount E behind it.” 又据《云南通志馆征集云南各县疆域资料》载：“峨山高耸县治之北，势甚巍峨，峨者大也，是以山为峨名之由来，xu山在峨山之下，有xu猊人居焉，以人名山，是为xu山命名之由来。Again, it is recorded in Data on the territory of Each County in Yunnan Collected by Yunnan Annuals Center that “Mount E stands high on the north side of the county seat. It is very majestic. E means big and that is why the mount is named E. Mount Xu, which is lower than Mount E, was inhabited by Xuni people and named after its inhabitants, and that is why the mount is named Xu. 元时建县于xu山之阳，北有峨山为其屏障，嶍峨连用，为嶍峨命名之由来”。In the Yuan Dynasty, a county was established on the south side of the mount, having Mount E as its barrier on the north side.
